Even since her early childhood Roos Vandekerckhove has been fascinated by design, colours and textures. At a young age she was intrigued by textiles in all their facets and possibilities. After training as a graphic designer she took up fashion design in her own studio , focusing on rich, warm materials like felt, hand-woven fabrics, knitwear and leather. Her quirky, highly pronounced accessories hovering between art and wearability add a strong personal touch to their wearers. Texture, tactility, humour and daring use of colour, with a measured dose of emotion, are recurring themes. With a strong hand which betrays her earlier training as a graphic designer, she marks out well-identified areas in which she plays with planes, lines and colours that radiate a certain calm despite their playfulness. Rose interprets the term accessory broadly: every item has its own hidden story or captures an idea. Her work is a simplification of the many stimuli and stories we experience in everyday life, and which she converts into a stylish whole. From Roos Vandekerckhove's creations there emanates an aesthetic stillness concealing an ardent joie de vivre. It is for this combination that she was selected among others for Design Flanders. Her dream is to awaken something inside us and to continue to stimulate us.
